Dr Alex Boote Discusses Tackling Damp & Mould At Your Eaves Junction

10th March 2025

Tackling damp and mould webinar

We’re excited to share that we’ve just ran another successful webinar aimed at offering hands on advice on tackling damp and mould at the historically difficult to insulate eaves junction. At ARC, innovation isn’t just about creating great products – it’s about knowing them inside out and making sure we have the in-house expertise to support our customers every step of the way, helping to ensure you have the perfect solution to your challenge every time.

A Deep Dive into Damp & Mould Prevention

The session, hosted by our very own Product Innovation Manager and insulation expert, Dr Alex Boote, tackled the important topic of damp and mould – something that’s been making national headlines week after week.

With an engineering PhD and three patents under his belt, Alex is the go-to expert when it comes to insulation. If there’s something he doesn’t know about our products, it’s probably not worth knowing!

Ventilation, Insulation & U-Values

The session highlighted why proper insulation is vital in preventing damp and mould, particularly at tricky junctions like the eaves. Alex explained why airtight, well-insulated homes are more important than ever, not just for energy efficiency and sustainability but also to help tackle the rising cost of living.

Understanding The Issue

Things got technical as Alex broke down the fundamentals of U-values and the critical role of ventilation in reducing damp and mould risk. He explained how gaps in insulation at the eaves create thermal bridges – cold spots where moisture condenses, leading to mould growth. Keeping a clear ventilation path is key to preventing this.

Industry Challenges

One of the biggest challenges in the UK housing market is the huge variety of properties, from pitched to flat roofs, with different rafter dimensions and spacings. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for insulation. Legislature and frameworks such as like PAS 2035, Awaab’s Law, and NHBC requirements rightly putting pressure on retrofit professionals to get it right, having the right solutions in place is more important than ever.

Introducing The Retrofit Eaves Insulator

That’s where our Retrofit Eaves Insulator, launched in 2024, comes in. It’s the first product of its kind, specifically designed to combat heat loss at the eaves junction while maintaining essential ventilation.

Alex explained why this innovation is such a game-changer, how it helps prevent mould and damp, and shared some handy installation tips. With a robust range of sizes available, we’ve ensured that every home can be retrofitted effectively to stay warm and mould-free. With innovation at the forefront of everything we do, Alex also discussed a brand new solution in the wings for when there’s no access over the wallp plate to ensure continuous insulation.

Thank You for Joining Us!

A huge thank you to everyone who attended our webinar, it was fantastic to share knowledge and discuss how we can all work towards better, healthier and more habitable homes.
